Federer enjoys luck in French Open draw

PARIS: Roger Federerimage won the opening skirmishes of his French Open battle with double defending champion Rafael Nadalimage yesterday when the world number one was handed the easier of early round draws.

Federerimage, bidding to win a first ever Roland Garros title and hoping to become only the third man in history to hold all four Grand Slams, will face his first serious test in the fourth round where former 2003 champion Juan Carlos Ferrero may wait.

He will open his campaign against America’s Michael Russell, the world number 71, before facing either a qualifier or Frenchman Thierry Ascione in the second round.

Another qualifier or Potito Starace of Italy will be a third round opponent.

By contrast, Nadalimage, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Bjorn Borg by winning three French Opens in a row, faces highly-rated Argentinian teenager Juan Martin del Potro in his opener before a second round clash with either a qualifier or Russia’s Teimuraz Gabashvili.

Britain’s surprise 2004 semi-finalist Tim Henman could be a third round opponent, with 2004 champion Gaston Gaudio or former world number one Lleyton Hewitt possibly waiting to pounce in the fourth round.

American third seed Andy Roddick, who has never survived beyond the third round, opens against Russia’s Igor Andreev, the last man to beat Nadalimage before the Spaniard went off on his record-breaking epic.

Meanwhile, women’s top seed and defending champion Justin Henin, who is seeking her third consecutive title and fourth in the last five years, opens her campaign against Russian world number 67 Elena Vesnina.

The Belgian world number one is seeded to meet 2002 champion Serena Williams in the quarter-finals.

Second seeded Russian Maria Sharapova faces eFrenchwoman Emilie Loit in the first round with the best home hope Amelie Mauresmo, a potential last eight opponent, taking on Laura Granville of the US.

Roger Federerimage had the perfect response to questions about his status as the world’s top-ranked player – he ended Rafael Nadalimage’s 81-match winning streak on clay.

Federerimage beat Nadalimage 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the final of the Hamburg Masters on Sunday to win his first clay-court title in two years and snap out of a slump during which he failed to win a title in four events. It was his worst run since he became No. 1 in February 2004.

Federerimage also gave himself a major boost one week before the French Open, the second major of the year and the only Grand Slam he hasn’t won.

“It was an incredible performance from my side,” Federerimage said. “I had a great day, it’s nice to be playing well again. It’s my first title on clay in a couple of years.”

Nadalimage, who had never lost to Federerimage on clay in five previous matches and leads the overall series 7-4, was impressed.

“He is unbelievable,” the Spaniard said.

Nadalimage, ranked No. 2 in the world behind Federerimage, had been unbeaten on the surface since April 2005, a run that included 13 titles.

“If I have to lose against anyone, then he is the man,” Nadalimage said. “I am not sad to lose to the best in the world.”

Federerimage said he finally found the formula to play against Nadalimage on clay.

“I was dictating play,” Federerimage said. “His streak was phenomenal – 81 matches in a row on clay is fantastic.”

At the start of the match, it didn’t look like Nadalimage’s streak would be ending.

He raced through the first set, with Federerimage making many errors and having trouble with his serve.

But the match turned completely when Federerimage broke serve for a 2-1 lead in the second, after fighting off two break points.

“I returned better and I served better and I was dictating play,” Federerimage said.

Nadalimage, on the other hand, began to struggle with his shots and even his fierce forehand frequently began to go long or wide. The Spaniard, who won the Rome Masters series one week ago, appeared to be running out of steam.

Federerimage took advantage and won a set at love against Nadalimage for the second time since beating him in the final at Wimbledon last year.

“He can come back any time and I was making more mistakes than usual,” Nadalimage said. “I lost a little bit of power after the first set and maybe I was mentally a little bit tired.”

“Now I have to start another (streak).”

Federerimage has won in Hamburg in four of his last five visits and claimed his third title of the year after the Australian Open and Dubai.

“It’s great to play here again and win again. I’ve fallen in love with this tournament,” he said.

Federerimage earned $458,218 for his win, Nadalimage half of that.

Federerimage was playing his first tournament since splitting with coach Tony Roche. He has said he will go to the French Open and Wimbledon without a new coach.

“Hi,

I’m just doing some last-minute tests before Leiden. The public release is still not quite ready. It will be soon, but I won’t dare to give a day yet.

And yes, in self-play, 2.3.2 clobbers 2.3.1, I’ve played >1000 blitz games. We’ll see how much of this shows up in the official rating lists.

Vas”
