Here is a cool personal finance trick. Good for artists and animators that might charge hourly…
Figure out how much your hourly rate translates into per year, or how much you make per hour from your annual salary.
To find your annual salary, just take your hourly rate, double it, and add a thousand to the end. If you make $20/hour, you make approximately $40,000. If you make $30/hour, you make approximately $60,000/year.
This also works in reverse. To find your hourly rate, divide by two and drop the thousand. So $50,000/year becomes approximately $25/hour.
This is based on a general 40-hour workweek and doesn’t include taxes, but it’s a good general back-of-the-napkin trick.
The best number to use shifts based on the percentage APR. 72 is the best number to use for anything in the 6-10% range (always within 1%).
70 is the best to use for anything in the 1-3% range (again, in this range, it’s within 1%).
If you always want to stay within 1% (if you’re the kind of person who wants to show off knowing the exact week that someone will have double their money) use the following trick:
Start with 70, and add 1 for every 3 percent, then divide by the percent.
For example, on a 18% investment, you use 70+6 (one for every 3) and get 76/18 or 4.22 years. Rule of 72 gives 4.00, and the real answer is ln(2)/ln(1.18) or 4.18. In fact, this 70+ rule is accurate to within 1.5 percent for all APR’s under 50%, and accurate to within 4% for everything under 100% APR. It works a lot better for higher APRs, where regular Rule of 72 breaks down.
